Technical Case Study

Ford Diesel Engine [1.6 Duratorq TDCi, 2.0 Duratorq TDCi, 2.2 Duratorq TDCi]

Autologic’s OEM-Trained Master Technician supports a customer with a blocked Diesel Particulate Filter on a Ford.
Using Autologic diagnostic software and extensive product knowledge for Ford, Autologic identifies the cause and steps needed to fix the problem.

Issue:

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is blocked and failing regeneration.

The customer indicates that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) warning light is shown on the instrument panel cluster, and the car is experiencing restricted performance.

Fault codes presented:

P244C [Exhaust Temperature Too Low for Particulate Filter Regeneration] and/or,
P26A1 [Exhaust Aftertreatment Glow Plug Circuit/Open]

Cause

Autologic OEM-Trained Master Technician identified a possible cause is that the vaporiser is physically blocked, or a blown fuse due to a vaporiser component internal short circuit caused by the vaporiser glowplug overheating, or pump failure.

Action

Autologic provided the customer with the following actions to find the fault and make the necessary repairs:
  1. Gain access to the vaporiser, connect a vacuum pump (Mityvac) and see if the vaporiser holds a vacuum. If so, then the vaporiser is blocked and will need replacing.
  1. If the fuse for the vaporiser glowplug or pump has blown, then test the glowplug resistance (Nominal 1.1 Ohms, if less than 0.8 Ohms or greater than 1.3 Ohms then the vaporizer glow plug is faulty and will need to be replaced).
  1. If the value is within spec, then disconnect the fuel line from the pump and place the end of the fuel line in a clean container and run the bleed/prime service function within the Autologic diagnostic software. If the pump is noisy, or does not run, then check the wiring to the pump and also that the fuel lines are not blocked. Replace pump and bleed as necessary.
