Working on BMW HEVs in your workshop?

This week the Opus IVS 360 BMW team supported a customer servicing a BMW i3 fitted with a range extender requiring an oil service.
In order to carry out a simple task such as changing the oil and filter on the petrol range extender engine, you need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely.

BMW insist you carry out a high voltage battery service disconnect before any work can be carried out. To do this you need to be IMI level 2 qualified as a minimum and the BMW repair instructions to do so need to be followed step by step!
Here is the guidance the IVS 360 OEM trained technicians provided:

After the oil service has been carried out and the high voltage system has been re-energised and verified, you need to test the operation of the range extender, to do so please follow the steps listed below:

1. Open the tailgate and driver’s door.
2. Switch on the ignition.
3. Engage drive position P.
4. Press and hold the accelerator pedal.
5. Whilst holding the accelerator pedal, press the brake pedal 3 times and hold down.
6. Release the accelerator pedal and press start-stop button.

The engine will now start as long as the battery has less than 75% state of charge.
